OPEN GARDEN SQUARES WEEKEND EVENT, SATURDAY 7 JUNE 2008

For the second time ever, The London Parks and Gardens Trust invited Canons Park to take part in this prestigious event, where garden squares all over the UK - some privately owned and therefore never usually on view - are open to the public. The George V Memorial Garden in Canons Park is now an attractive and well maintained place to spend a few minutes or longer of quiet enjoyment. In order to increase public awareness of this asset we held our second annual event in the garden, and about 100 people attended.

From 10am to 5pm the Friends had an information/membership stall set up in the garden and were on hand to answer questions about the Park.  Several local artists were present painting views of the garden and visitors were invited to sit next to them and try their hand at water-colour painting, using materials kindly donated by The Triumph Press.

At 2pm a small ceremony was held to formally dedicate one of two newly restored benches, now in place under the shelter in the garden. These benches have been restored by the Friends of Canons Park, and one of them is dedicated to the memory of Councillor Janet Cowan, former Mayor of Harrow and an energetic supporter of the Friends, who sadly died a few months ago.
